Have you had experience with German butterballs? I planted a 50 gallon barrel in April, the plants just yellowed this past week, I tipped my barrel over and....3 potatoes, not one bigger than a nickel. The root system didn't extend down more than 6 inches.

I wonder if it is because I had a blue barrel, too much heat over the Georgia summer?

How big of a yield can you expect from a barrel planted in this manner? I am single. I am going to plant one barrel and what I get is what I get because I am going to have to can my potatoes. But my sister has 7 people to feed and a nice cool basement for storage. She is trying to calculate how many barrels to plant. She knows she probably will not get enough to feed them all for all winter but would like to have some idea what she can expect if she plants say .... 6 barrels.

They do need the sun to sprout and continue sprouting up through the dirt after being covered up. You might can grow them in a basement with some grow lights, though. Only way to know for sure is to try it. They need water, too.

Don't need the sun. Can this project be done in a basement?

Thank You, Allison
