The Mayonnaise Poll
What is the BEST mayonnaise? What brand of mayonnaise is best? I’ve used Kraft Mayonnaise for years. YEARS. Like 35 YEARS! and that was as a cook, that was not counting when I was growing up.
Lots of people noticed a change. Mostly only loyal users like myself. Due to the rising cost of Kraft Mayonnaise over the past year or so, we had decided to switch anyway. But now it will be for sure.
I started trying different mayonnaise brands. Thinking of how good homemade mayonnaise tastes, but it has a shorter shelf life. Mayonnaise is a Southern Food Staple. Oh my I am going to have to buy a small jar of EVERY brand at the market, and taste test. And potato salad test. And salad test, and sandwich test; I can see lots of tests going on here. Hmmmm.
I started getting the LITTLE jars so I was not stuck with some gross mayonnaise that everybody hated.
I have made homemade mayonnaise and it is pretty easy to do. It does not store as long, but I just made smaller batches.
I don’t want some funky spiced up messed up mayonnaise. Mayonnaise is used for too many things. I bought the Kraft Olive Oil Mayo once, it SOUNDED good, but I will have to sneak it in some dishes here and there to use it up, the family did not like it. I don’t like low fat mayonnaise. Oh I have TRIED to like it cause that is what I need to use on my “diet.” But I cannot sacrifice my lovely Southern Potato Salad to just ANY mayonnaise.
I’m not sure if you have some of the brands where you are that we have here. Such as Bama, Deep South. There is Duke’s. Lots of folks swear by Hellmanns Mayonnaise.
So, let’s hear it. We want to know what mayonnaise you are using, how long have you used it, and why? Why can’t I spell Hellmanns, I keep trying! Heck, earlier today I had to remember there were two n’s in mayonnaise.
So, come forth you knowledgeable mayonnaise experts, share your SECRETS!

Used Kraft for 50 years. Hate the new stuff. Maybe the canola oil they all seem to use now.
Looking for old fashion plain mayonnaise. Hope to find a “nitch” brand.
Need mayonnaise for BLT!

Ooops! forgot to add this – You all know that the very best, bar none, dark chocolate cake is made with best foods mayo? Take your favorite dark chocolate cake mix, substitute same measure of mayonnaise for stated measure of oil, add two tablespoons instant coffee, add 1 teaspoon real vanilla extract, the same number of eggs required. Mix and bake according to directions. Viola! To die for chocolate cake. The reason the mayo works its magic is because it already contains the required oil and more eggs, so you end up with a truly light and moist cake. You do not even need to insult the cake with gooey canned chocolate frosting. Use whipped cream, add two tablespoons powdered sugar and 1 teaspoon vanilla and whip til stiff. You can flavor the cream with additional instant coffee or malted milk powder, or hazelnut flavoring, or coconut. Make it your own and enjoy…Love, Nana

Born and raised in the “city by the bay” our family since the 1950′s only used Best Foods (aka: Hellman’s as it is known east of the Mississippi)…However, over the years we switched to Kraft.. then a couple of years ago we noticed a deplorable change in the flavor and consistency of the Kraft product. It became almost runny. So we tried the newly touted olive oil mayos and they did not work either. We are just not a Miracle Whip family. We decided to give best foods another try, now again, we only buy Best Foods (Hellman’s) mayonnaise. Most of the others are simply imitations.

I’m British and we mainly eat Hellman’s Original. I’ve tried Kraft too and I can’t see any problem with it, though I didn’t really know it before the “big change”, so I guess I’m not qualified to say whether it’s better now or worse. It tasted OK, though. I’d stick with Hellman’s, personally. It’s a no-nonsense, reliable mayonnaise that goes well with everything, especially potato salad, chicken salad, etc.

Hellman’s Original is best. Duke’s is good if you can get it – brother in law – says it is the best. I use Hellman’s Light. Husband loves Miracle Whip Light – but doesn’t realize I don’t use it in his salads, etc. Have a recipe for homemade I will send. don’t make except at Thanksgiving – we haven’t used original in years because of calories.
